II · THE NEST

Snug, intimate, restful

It feels like home, with rather less on your mind. Take a deep breath of clean air, catch the lavender carried on a light late-afternoon breeze: all of Provence is within reach.

Settle into a long chair in the shade of the oak, open your book, pour a tall cold pastis. You have arrived. The holiday starts here.

III · AT THE EDGE OF THE GARRIGUE

In every season

In summer you are glad of the cool old terracotta floors, the shaded terrace and the air conditioning.

Off-season it is the warm tones of the Provençal walls, the soft sun on your face, the thousand colours of autumn in the garrigue just beyond the garden. Go and lose yourself in it, and pick some wild thyme on the way back: Provençal cooking is mostly three pinches of it.

IV · A RESTFUL SETTING

On a mild summer evening, when the sun finally gives in, take a seat by the window and watch it bow out.

Sometimes it glows red and the mistral is on its way. Either way it is the moment of the day worth stopping for.
